Douglas Pharmaceuticals Australia Ltd (’DPAL’)
is a wholly owned subsidiary of Douglas International Holdings Limited, a New Zealand resident company (‘DIHL’). DPAL commenced trading in Australia in 1989. DPAL entered the Australian market with the primary focus on infant nutritional products supplemented with a small range of generic products.

DIHL disposed of its Nutritional business in 1996. Having had a small number of products registered in the Australian Market, and in anticipation of the growth in the number and value of products to become accessible for the generic industry, DPAL focused its activities towards the sale of generic products to pharmacy and pharmacists. The Australian Government introduced a brand substitution scheme on 1 December 1994. This scheme allows pharmacists to supply the less expensive ‘generic’ brand of certain medicines to patients regardless of which brand the doctor prescribes. These changes made the Australian market attractive for DIHL who then started promoting generic products developed in New Zealand by DIHL in the Australian market.
